Google is at the forefront of cutting-edge technology with Bard, its latest artificial intelligence tool. Back in 2014, Alphabet, Google’s parent company, acquired DeepMind. However, to further revolutionize the AI industry, DeepMind has now been integrated with Google’s Brain team, resulting in the birth of Google DeepMind. Alphabet and Google CEO, Sundar Pichai, expressed in a statement that the combined expertise of these teams will “significantly accelerate our progress in AI.”
Just recently, Sundar Pichai, CEO of Alphabet and Google, made a notable call for a global regulatory framework for artificial intelligence (AI) – akin to the treaties used to regulate the use of nuclear arms. Pichai expressed his concerns about the intense competition among companies to produce technological advancements in AI, and how improper deployment can have detrimental effects.
The Importance of AI
Despite being in the process of scaling up, Bard already exhibits comparable functions and features to ChatGPT and other chatbots. However, as Bard is still in its developmental phase, there may be areas where the information it generates could be inaccurate. AI-powered chatbots have revolutionized how people access information online, ranging from correcting written codes and grammar to fact-checking and beyond.
The versatility of AI in providing access to information is vast, offering a wide array of possibilities for leveraging its capabilities as a means of obtaining valuable insights and knowledge from the internet. DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis expressed in a memo to his employees the immense potential of collaborating closely with colleagues across Google Product Areas. He emphasized the opportunity to deliver AI research and products that can dramatically enhance the lives of billions of people, revolutionize industries, advance science, and serve diverse communities.
Hassabis further highlighted his belief that the creation of Google DeepMind can expedite the journey towards a future where increasingly capable and general AI is built responsibly and safely. He acknowledged the need to address some of the most daunting scientific and engineering challenges of our time to achieve this vision.
AI Pros and Cons
While Artificial Intelligence (AI) presents numerous opportunities, it also carries potential risks and drawbacks that require proper regulation. Google, a prominent player in the field of AI, has faced criticism for lagging behind competitors such as Microsoft, which has invested in OpenAI to power its Bing search engine.
Google CEO Sundar Pichai has acknowledged the risk of companies rushing to develop AI technology without fully considering its downsides. One significant concern is the lack of transparency associated with AI tools. Many AI models, including deep neural networks, are often considered “black boxes,” as their decision-making processes are complex and not easily understandable or interpretable.
