Dr. Geoffrey Hinton, a renowned figure in the field of artificial intelligence, has resigned from Google after more than a decade of working there. His reason for leaving is to be able to speak freely about the risks that come with the development of AI technology for humanity.
On May 1st, 2023, Dr. Hinton officially joined the group of individuals and companies who have expressed concerns about the use and development of AI technology.
This news was unexpected because Dr. Hinton is a pioneer in the field of AI and has dedicated a significant portion of his life to advancing it. In 2012, he and two of his graduate students at the University of Toronto developed a groundbreaking technology that formed the basis of the AI systems used by many of the world’s biggest tech companies.
The Imminent Dangers of AI

Geoffrey Hinton, a highly-regarded researcher in the field of artificial intelligence, has released a statement in the New York Times expressing regret over his life’s work.
He explained that in the past, he had consoled himself with the belief that if he hadn’t worked on AI, someone else would have. While Hinton and other industry leaders have discussed the benefits of AI, the discussion surrounding the potential risks associated with AI has only recently gained attention among tech enthusiasts.
During a 2021 commencement address at the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay in Mumbai, Hinton stated that the rapid progress of AI could transform society in ways that are not yet fully understood, and not all of the effects are likely to be positive.
Dr. Hinton initially emphasized the potential benefits of AI in advancing technology. However, his views have since shifted from being a pioneer in AI to an opponent of AI. He now recognizes the various risks associated with AI, including the potential for generative AI to spread misinformation and the vulnerability of AI systems to cyberattacks.
If an AI system is compromised, the damage caused could be significant. As AI continues to advance, there is a risk of job displacement as AI technology becomes capable of replacing tasks currently performed by humans, potentially leading to significant economic disruption.
The Regulation Of AI Technology

In March, over 1,000 technology leaders and researchers signed an open letter advocating for a six-month pause on the development of new AI systems.
This followed the release of a new version of OpenAI’s ChatGPT, which raised concerns about the “profound risks to society and humanity” posed by AI technologies.
Although many experts signed the letter to warn against these risks, Dr. Hinton did not publicly criticize Google or any other company until after he had resigned from his job.
While Artificial Intelligence presents numerous opportunities and benefits, it is crucial to address the potential risks and dangers associated with it and ensure that AI systems are developed and deployed in a responsible and ethical manner.
